Rameau's Roots and Mouret's Madness (8 December)

RAMEAU'S ROOTS AND MOURET'S MADNESS

Wednesday 8 December 2021 at 7:30pm

Devised by director Guido Martin-Brandis, violinist Sarah Bealby-Wright, and movement director/choreographer Shona Morris, this innovative show explores Jean-Philippe Rameau’s early roots as a travelling violinist, what experiences might have influenced his later operatic masterpieces, and the astonishing story of the brilliant, yet largely forgotten composer Jean-Joseph Mouret, writer of the first French comic opera, who later went mad listening to Rameau’s Castor et Pollux.

With a 14 strong cast of musicians singers and actor/dancers, this entertaining show tells the intertwined story of these two men through their music and the popular music that surrounded them. Utilising singing, acting, dance, mime, movement and music, we will bring back to life the traditions of 18th century French theatre, from love stories to demons, from the simplest peasant dance, to the grandest operatic spectacle, retelling this fascinating story to a modern audience.

Rameau and the travelling theatre arrive in the town square performing popular tunes and dances before moving on to the gardens at the Château de Sceaux where the Duchess is holding one of her ‘Grand Nuits’ with her private composer JJ Mouret providing the entertainment, a new comic opera 'Les Amours de Ragonde'. After an interlude in the Société du Caveau for a sing-song and glass of wine time has passed and Rameau has finished his Opera Castor et Pollux. Mouret and the Duchess go to the Opera house for the premiere but Mouret is eaten up with jealousy and goes mad, storms and demons in his head join with those in the opera story as he enters Hades with Pollux.
